TE PUIA THERMAL PARK (Rotorua)
Thermal Park & Cultural/Crafts Centre
Pohutu Geyser. The most famous geyser, of the 65 geysers found in the Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley in Rotorua, is the famous, awe-inspiring Pohutu Geyser, meaning big splash or explosion. Pohutu erupts up to 30 metres (100 foot) high, depending on her mood, and is the largest active geyser in New Zealand and the southern hemisphere. There are few places in the world where geothermal phenomena such as geysers are as extensive and accessible as in Rotorua, New Zealand.
The magnificent Pohutu Geyser erupts up to 20 times daily, a sight well worth waiting for. Guided tours at Te Puia leave on the hour and are approximately 90 minutes long. This is a place where 'Gods Breathed Fire'. In the past, Māori regarded geysers and thermal activitiy as gifts from the gods. According to local Māori, the Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley was one of the sites where Te Pupu and Te Hoata, the Goddesses of Fire, emerged from the earth’s core while trying to find their brother Ngatoroirangi, who was stranded on Mount Tongariro. As they rose to the surface looking for their brother, they left part of the fire they carried, creating geysers, hot springs and mud pools, leaving our Te Whakarewarewa valley with the geothermal activity that remains today.

WHITE ISLAND TOURS (Whakatane)
PeeJay Boat Tours To White Island
White Island Tours gives you an in-depth guided tour of one of the world’s most interesting volcanoes. The island’s history is related in an informative way, with scientific information explained in an easy-to-understand manner.
Shortly after check-in, the tour departs from the Whakatane Wharf aboard PeeJay, a luxury launch specifically built for the tours to White Island. The boat trip out to the island is around 80 minutes, depending on conditions, so there is plenty of time to take in the scenery and marine life whilst enjoying our on board commentary.
Upon arrival at White Island, we anchor PeeJay and ferry everyone over to the island via inflatable boat to an existing concrete jetty. There is a short ladder to climb, a steel planking system to cross, and some boulders to negotiate before reaching the shore. Then it is time to start your exploration of New Zealand’s only live marine volcano. Trained tour guides will take you through the remains of the old sulphur mining factory and up close and personal with the bright yellow sulphur crystals. Just to top it all off, venture right up to the main crater’s edge. It’s all here, the hissing, roaring, eerie steam rising from the crater lake. After feeling the awesome power of Mother Nature, sit back, relax and enjoy the included packed lunch before we head for home. On our trip home we might even be lucky enough to spend some time with dolphins, whales or seals.
